In Memory of Steven L. Bressler (1951–2025)

Dr. Steven L. Bressler, Professor in the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences and the Department of Psychology at Florida Atlantic University, passed away on 18 November 2025 at the age of 74.

Born in 1951, Steven graduated from Clayton High School in 1969, earned his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1972, and completed his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. His career in neuroscience spanned decades, during which he founded the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), where he spent over 30 years teaching and mentoring students as a professor. Dr. Bressler published his pioneering work on large-scale brain networks in dozens of prestigious journals, including Nature and Science, and was cited more than 20,000 times in scientific literature.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Bressler was an inspiring colleague, a devoted mentor, and an erudite scholar whose intellectual passion and dedication to advancing neuroscience and complex systems theory inspired collaborators and students worldwide. His service to the International Neural Network Society (INNS) was significant; he was recognized as a member of the College of Fellows and served on the Board of Governors, helping to advance the society’s mission at the forefront of neural network research. His passing is a profound loss to the international scientific community and the INNS.
