2024 Nobel Prizes recognize work in Neural NetworksINNS is thrilled that the enormous impact of Neural Networks on science and applications have been recognized with awards to researchers in our field. Congratulations to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton who share the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, while Demis Hassabis and John Jumper were awarded half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Professors Hopfield and Hinton are both pioneers of Neural Networks and Artificial Intelligence and iconic promoters of our discipline. Professor Hopfield was the 1997 recipient of the Hermann von Helmholtz Award by the International Neural Network Society, and both Professors Hopfield and Hinton developed some of the fundamental methodologies which are routinely used by our members. Sir Demis Hassabis and Dr. John Jumper led the team developing AlphaFold, a groundbreaking AI system that predicts the 3D structure of proteins from their amino acid sequences. The news from the Nobel Committee is a great vindication of our discipline and the enormous impact it has had on the world we live in. Indeed, the INNS has been a pioneer of the Neural Networks movement, which led to the AI boom we have today. These Nobel Prizes are also hugely inspirational for our young generation researchers. We wish to congratulate John, Geoff, Demis and John, and hope to see them soon at one of the INNS events. |
