In Memory of Bernard Widrow (1929–2025)


Bernard “Bernie” Widrow, a foundational figure in adaptive signal processing and neural networks, passed away on September 30, 2025, at the age of 95.

Professor Widrow contributed to a distinguished six-decade career at Stanford University, where his groundbreaking research helped shape the technologies that enable modern computing, communication, and artificial intelligence. His work on learning systems and computers that learn from experience established essential frameworks for the field of AI. Within our community, he was a member of the INNS College of Fellows and served as the second President of the Society.

Beyond his scientific brilliance, Bernie was a beloved mentor and wide-ranging inventor known for his warmth, sharp wit, and humble nature. Colleagues and students remember him as a captivating storyteller whose genuine care and curiosity brought joy to every interaction. His passing is a profound loss to the international scientific community and the INNS.
